What is going on in Kevin’s life?

A site that inform’s people about what Kevin has been up to.

Introduction

A long time ago (not even sure myself - but probably close to the mid-1990s) I became interested in discovering how the internet worked and what it took to make an operational web page that could share different aspects of my life. The original intent was to have a site where I could easily access and share digital assets related to my life in a single location.

The tools and services available at the time were rudimentary so I ended up developing the pages myself in Dreamweaver and wrote lots of code to pull information from devices that were not online (in particular my weather station). Having to learn about HTML, CSS, PHP, mysql and Javascript was educational, but time consuming. Fast forward 30 years and now there are services for almost everything but they are scattered all over the internet.

This website is an update from the old, not sustainable custom pages to one using new tools and services. Following is a list of the various pieces of information I am trying to pull into a single location:

Web page design - I have moved away from a code-based layout to using an existing service. This allows use of drag-and-drop editing as well as frees me up from having to maintain a rented server.

Photography - Instead of having to individually upload and organize photographs I have them stored where they can be easily organized. Many services are available for this. I am using Flickr, but am exploring using Lightroom online since that is where my photo originals are kept and processed.

Genealogy - I used a shareware program (Webtrees) for storing personal genealogy information, but this has been causing problems at my web server service and is causing me to move to an online service (ancestry.com).

Exercise - This was missing from my original attempt since Polar did not offer any ability to easily access data. This field has progressed significantly and Strava has become the location for my bicycling information.

Weather - I have moved away from storing all my weather information and currently use the service provided by the maker of my weather station - Davis Instruments.

Miscellaneous - This is information and notes that people may find interesting. This technology has remained essentially the same with the exception of changing from pure text documents to using Adobe pdf files.

Summary - I hope you enjoy looking through the site and would be happy to answer any questions you may have or implement any suggestions that are consistent with the intent of this site.

Make it stand out.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
